Week 10: Artist Conversation

This week I had the pleasure of meeting Dawn Ertl. She is working on her Masters degree in fine arts, concentration in sculpture. The name of her exhibit was “Radius of Action”. Her art pieces where made of woven plastic bags and wool. She was very friendly and was excited to answer the questions we had for her.

I loved the way she described her art work. She said she enjoys making beautiful things out of another person’s trash (plastic bags). And that is exactly what she did. After she explained this to us, it allowed me to examine at the pieces differently. I agree with the saying “one persons trash is another person’s treasure,” this is how I would describe her artwork. It was amazing to see what beautiful things could be created with items that people throw away.

Her friends and family helped her by saving their plastic bags and gave them to her for her piece. Also, her artwork was all hand woven from the ceiling and dyes the yarn before weaving it in.

Her exhibit was powerful and inspiring. I enjoyed talking to Dawn and hope to see one of her exhibits again in the future.
